Profile

Colonel David Eric Violand currently serves as the Deputy J2 (Intelligence) within the Joint Force Headquarters, United States Department of Defense Information Networks(JFHQ-DODIN) at Fort Meade, Maryland. Slated to take command of the 525 Expeditionary MI Brigade at Fort Bragg in July 2021, COL Violand will lead the transformation of that capability in providing intelligence in support of the XVIII Airborne Corps’ 4 Divisions and Headquarters.

COL Violand was commissioned as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the University of Notre Dame in 1998 and immediately entered active service as an Infantry officer assigned to the 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Upon completion of his platoon leadership and company executive officer time, LTC Violand transitioned into the Military Intelligence (MI) branch and was assigned as a Battalion S2 with 2nd Battalion, 63rd Armor of the 1st Infantry Division in Vilseck, Germany. In this role, he deployed in support of Operation Joint Guardian to Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo and in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to Baqubah, Iraq.

Returning to Hawaii, COL Violand served as the South Asia Branch Chief for the Joint Intelligence Operations Center- Pacific Command before taking command of the 408th MI Company, 500th MI Brigade at Schofield Barracks. Following company command, he assumed the Executive Officer duties for the Special Troops Battalion of 3rd Brigade, 10th Infantry Division (Mountain) and deployed to Logar, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, ultimately serving as the Brigade S2 for the combat unit.

After earning a Master’s of Arts Degree with Highest Distinction in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval College of Command and Staff, COL Violand was assigned as an Observer/Controller Trainer at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California. He then served as the Executive Officer for the Deputy Chief of Staff, G2 at the US Army’s Training and Doctrine Command before assuming command of the 201st MI Battalion (Interrogation) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Upon completion of Battalion Command, COL Violand was assigned as the Chief of Collective Training for the Army’s Intelligence and Security Command at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. His last assignment prior to arriving at JFHQ-DODIN was attendance at the National War College at Fort McNair, Washington D.C., where he graduated as a Distinguished Graduate with a Master’s of Science in National Security Strategy.

COL Violand’s awards and decoration include the Bronze Star (1OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (5OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (2OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1OLC), Parachutist Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge and Ranger Tab.

COL Violand is married to the former Hayley Hickerson of Lawrence, Kansas and is the proud father of two young men, Jackson (15) and Charlie (12). They reside in Vass, North Carolina.
