Profile

Lieutenant Colonel (Promotable) Silas J. Calhoun is a Washington, DC native, and received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Northeastern University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications. He received an Advanced Management Program graduate certificate from the National Defense University in
2009, and was awarded a Master of Science in Computer and Information Sciences from Northeastern University in 2011. He has served in several tactical, operational, strategic and joint organizations throughout his career including multiple deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

His military education includes: the U.S. Army Forces Command Leadership Course at the Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina, the Joint Command and Warfighting School, Security Cooperation Officers Course, Command and General Staff College, Department of Defense Chief Information Officer Course-Advanced Management Program at the National Defense University, National Computer Network Defense Course, Signal Officer Advanced Course, Bradley Fighting Vehicle Course, and Infantry Officer Basic Course.

His professional experience and assignments include cyber security operations, human and signals intelligence, joint planning and policy, strategic communication, and acquisition. Previously, he served as the Cyber Security Mission Manager at the National Security Agency (NSA), Threat Operations Center. He led a team of signals intelligence and cyber security experts to defend against the nation’s most dangerous cyber threats. In his follow on assignment, he served as the Military Executive Officer for the Cyber Security Operations Center at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), where he
successfully implemented a comprehensive and proactive initiative to detect insider threats. He also ensured a consistent highly effective operational security posture for NGA’s global classified and unclassified information systems. After he left NGA, he served as the Director of the Joint Forces Headquarters-Department of Defense Information Network (JFHQ-DODIN) Cyber Operations Center (JDOC). In that assignment, he advised the Deputy Commander on the global synchronization, coordination and defensive cyberspace operations-internal defensive measures, to enable power projection and freedom of action across all warfighting domains.

Most recent, Colonel Calhoun served as the Director of the U.S. Army Regional Cyber Center – Southwest Asia, located in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. In this role he directly synchronized DoD Information Network Operations (DoDIN) and Defensive Cyberspace Operations (DCO), across the Southwest Asia Theater of operation.

Colonel Calhoun has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (w/ OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (w/ OLC), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (w/ OLC), Global War On Terrorism Expedition Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal and the Korean Defense Service Medal.
