COL Mark D. Miles, USA

Joint Force Headquarters - Department of Defense Information Network


COL Mark D. Miles is the Director of Operations, J-3, for Joint Forces Headquarters, Department of Defense Information Network (JFHQ-DODIN). He is responsible for the operational-level command and control of DODIN Network Operations and Defensive Cyberspace Operation for all DOD Networks and their functional synchronization and integration as a key subordinate organization of USCYBERCOM.

COL Miles is a native of Lyndonville, New York and received his commission in 1995 upon graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

He began his career as a platoon leader in A Company, 44th Signal Battalion in Mannheim Germany where he successfully deployed his Platoon to Bosnia/ Herzegovina as part of Operation Joint Endeavor for 14 months.

COL Miles next served in Ft Huachuca, AZ where he commanded A Company, 86th Signal Battalion. After 9/11, his Company deployed to Afghanistan and Uzbekistan for 8 months to install the initial communication infrastructure for Operation Enduring Freedom. The Army then selected COL Miles to join the faculty at West Point as an instructor in the Electrical Engineering department after obtaining a Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He then completed the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS and moved to Ft Campbell, KY. He completed three deployments to Afghanistan while a member of the 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) - as a Brigade S6, as the Division G6 NETOPS officer and as the Deputy Division G6. He then joined the Army CIO/G6 staff in Washington DC where he served as the current operations chief. After his time in the Pentagon, COL Miles commanded the 307th Expeditionary Signal Battalion stationed in Hawaii and Alaska. After attending the National War College, COL Miles returned to Hawaii as the USARPAC D/G6 and then commanded the 516th Signal Brigade which has responsibility for installing, managing and defending Army networks throughout the Pacific AO.

COL Miles’ military education includes the National War College, the Command and General Staff College, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Signal Officer Basic and Advanced Courses as well as the Airborne and Air Assault courses. His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science from West Point, a Masters’ of Science from Carnegie Mellon University and Masters’ of Science in Strategic Studies from National Defense University. He also has obtained the Certified Information System Professional (CISSP) and Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) certifications.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (one Oak Leaf Cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service (four Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation medal, Army Achievement Medal (one Oak Leaf Cluster), the Airborne Badge, Air Assault Badge and various campaign participation ribbons.

COL Miles is married to COL Melissa Miles from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Melissa is currently the Executive Officer for the Director of the Defense Information System Agency and they have one son – Jacob (2).
