Description
Named Data Networks (NDN) has emerged in recent years as a realization of data-centric networking. In a data-centric network model, the focus of the network and its core services is on fetching data and delivering it back to its consumers. Since NDN adopts this model, the centerpiece of the NDN architecture is named, secured data packets. NDN natively supports data and origin integrity, in-network opportunistic caching and managed storage, stateful and adaptive forwarding, and well as multicast/multipath forwarding. These NDN features have been shown to provide scores of improvements to network resilience (in the face of disruption), efficiency (in utilizing scarce communication resources), and ease of configuration, all highly desirable features in tactical communication environments.
This tutorial aims at introducing a practical application of NDN in the battlefield. We will start by introducing the NDN architecture and the basic NDN network services. We will then shift our attention (and most of the time of the tutorial) towards a practical application of NDN in the notional tactical communication network shown below. We will first address the tactical communication network used defining the applications operating in it and characterizing the challenges of the communication environment(e.g. loss, delay, disruptions). We will then discuss how NDN can be applied in this network and characterize its performance.
