National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

  • Booth: T3

Advancing the state-of-the-art in IT (e.g., cybersecurity, AI and biometrics), NIST accelerates the development of systems that are reliable, usable, interoperable, and secure; advances measurement science; and conducts research to develop the measurements and standards supporting emerging technologies. Highlighted at this year’s booth are research programs from the Information Technology Laboratory that include Biometrics, Standards, Identity Credentialing, Cybersecurity, NCCoE, Usability, Privacy and Artificial Intelligence.

  • ******Using Artificial Intelligence for Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 Analysis and Reporting ****** NIST announces the release of Special Publication (SP) 1353 ipd (Initial Public Draft), QuickStart Guide for Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) Analysis and Reporting. This new quick-start guide illustrates practical and actionable ways AI could be used for analyzing, planning, implementing, and monitoring an organization’s progress toward achieving CSF 2.0 outcomes. The document’s purpose is to provide structured AI prompts as tools for practitioners to begin creating CSF-related artifacts in support of achieving CSF outcomes and identify current state of practice for AI prompt engineering in CSF implementation and analysis. https://www.nist.gov/news-events/news/2026/08/seeking-public-comment-using-artificial-intelligence-cybersecurity The comment period for NIST SP 1353 ipd is open through October 15, 2026, at 11:59 PM. Email comments to: csf@nist.gov.
  • To bring clarity to our testing scope and goals, what was formerly known as FRVT has been rebranded and split into FRTE (Face Recognition Technology Evaluation) and FATE (Face Analysis Technology Evaluation). Tracks that involve the processing and analysis of images will run under the FATE activity, and tracks that pertain to identity verification will run under FRTE. All existing participation and submission procedures remain unchanged. **FRTE**1:1 Verification, 1:N Search, FIVE, Twins Demonstration. **FATE**Age Estimation, Morph Detection, Presentation Attack Detection, Quality Summarization, Quality Defect Detection. https://www.nist.gov/programs-projects/face-technology-evaluations-frtefate
  • The NIST Fingerprint Viewer 2.0 (FpMV 2.0) is designed to provide the biometric community with a modern tool for viewing fingerprint images with detected minutiae points overlaid on the fingerprint image. The minutiae detection is based on "mindtct" application from the NIST Biometric Image Software (NBIS). FpMV 2.0 is now a modern, cross-platform GUI application designed to support Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems. It now supports minutiae detection across fingerprint images with varying pixel-per-inch (PPI) resolutions. It displays detected minutiae points overlaid on the fingerprint image, providing users with a clear visual representation of key fingerprint features, such as ridge endings and bifurcations. Has image support for: *.png *.bmp *.pbm *.pgm *.ppm *.jp2 *.wsq *.jpeg, *.jpg *.tif and *.tiff. Supports drag-and-drop image loading, allowing users to conveniently load fingerprint images. https://www.nist.gov/services-resources/software/fingerprint-minutiae-viewer-20-fpmv2

  • ANSI/NIST-ITL 1-2025
The latest version of the standard was unanimously approved by a quorum of the canvassees on January 15, 2026. The approved document, NIST SP 500-294, is available for download. Comments and corrections on the standard may be submitted in an official comment form to biometrics-editor@nist.gov. This standard is developed under the Procedures for the Development of American National Standards, July 1 2025, allowing this standard to achieve ANSI’s American National Standard designation. The approved 2025 update expands the capabilities of the standard to include Contactless Fingerprints, Updates for Face and Body Part Images, Updates for Friction Ridge Metadata, Updates for XML, New JSON Encoding, and Sunset Dates for all Encodings. https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/SpecialPublications/NIST.SP.500-290e4.pdf ...

  • Fast Capture (FastCAP) Project Update
NIST is pleased to announce the official conclusion of Phase One of our Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) vendor engagements within the Fast Capture (FastCAP) program. Over the course of this effort, NIST worked closely alongside industry participants to evaluate biometric acquisition capabilities, refine performance metrics, and test advanced prototypes and products for contactless rapid tenprint identity capture solutions. We extend our sincere gratitude to all participating commercial vendors and research collaborators for their dedication, technical contributions, and invaluable feedback throughout this foundational cycle. Completion of Participant Qualification Testing- In parallel with the conclusion of Phase One engagements, NIST has successfully finalized qualification testing with all active program participants under the framework defined in NIST Special Publication 500-339. https://www.nist.gov/itl/iad/btg/fast-capture ...

  • NIST SP 800-63-4: Digital Identity Guidelines
These guidelines cover identity proofing, authentication, and federation of users (such as employees, contractors, or private individuals) interacting with government information systems over networks. They define technical requirements in each of the areas of identity proofing, enrollment, authenticators, management processes, authentication protocols, federation, and related assertions. They also offer technical recommendations and other informative text intended as helpful suggestions. The guidelines are not intended to constrain the development or use of standards outside of this purpose. This publication supersedes NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-63-3. https://www.nist.gov/publications/nist-sp-800-63-4-digital-identity-guidelines ...
