Deputy Director of Operations for International Operations and Engagement
U.S. Indo-Pacific Command

Profile

Commodore Matthew Bowen is a Naval Warfare Officer serving on exchange as the Deputy Director of Operations for International Operations and Engagement, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (DJ3-IOE).

Before assuming his current duties, Commodore Bowen completed an exchange assignment as the Vice J5 Multinational Partner Integration at United States Cyber Command, which followed his appointment as the Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy’s Sea Training Group. Prior to that, he completed postings as J5 Plans at the Canadian Joint Operations Command and as the Commander of Sea Training Atlantic, before which he was privileged to be assigned to command the frigate HMCS TORONTO.

That appointment included a deployment as Commander TF ARTEMIS in the Arabian Sea, where the ship’s company earned a U.S Meritorious Unit Commendation. Other deployments of note include two with Standing NATO naval forces in Europe, two others in the Arabian Sea: Op APOLLO in response to the 9/11 attacks and Op ALTAIR with Combined Task Force 150, along with a year on exchange with the Royal Australian Navy.

A graduate of Royal Roads Military College, and the Canadian Forces College, his Bachelor and Masters Degrees focused on strategy and defence studies. He has served in numerous positions at the operational and strategic level, including both coastal Fleet Staffs, RCN Headquarters, and the Strategic Joint Staff.

He remains grateful for the support of his spouse without whom little of the above would have been possible.
