Profile
Lieutenant Colonel Thompson graduated the Virginia Military Institute in 2006 and joined the Marine Corps as part of Company F, The Basic School. Upon graduation, he attended the Basic Communications Officer Course in Quantico, Virginia and was assigned as the Assistant Communications Officer to the 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion (Bn) in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Lieutenant Colonel Thompson moved to the 1st Bn, 9th Marine Regiment which served as the battalion landing team for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), deploying to contingency operations in the South and Central Combatant Command theaters.
After returning from deployment with the 24th MEU, Lieutenant Colonel Thompson was assigned to the Marine Corps Network Operations and Security Center (MCNOSC) in Quantico, Virginia. He served as the Operations Center Officer-In-Charge and the Deputy Current Operations Officer for the MCNOSC until the summer of 2013 when he began the Expeditionary Warfare School.
In 2014, Lieutenant Colonel Thompson became the Assistant Communications Officer for the 13th MEU in Camp Pendleton, California, deployed in 2016 to the Pacific and Central Command theaters, and returned in the fall of that same year to become the Communications Officer. He departed in the summer of 2017 for assignment to The Basic School (TBS).
At The Basic School, Lieutenant Colonel Thompson served as the Headquarters and Service Company Commander before being deployed to Baghdad, Iraq from fall 2017 until spring 2018. While in Iraq, he served as the Deputy Chief of Operations for the Combined Joint Operations Center-Baghdad as a part of the Combined Joint Task Force-Operations Inherent Resolve. Upon returning to TBS, Lieutenant Colonel Thompson commanded Basic Officer Company A in the fall of 2018, and finished his tour at TBS as the Deputy Director of the Warfighting Instructor Group.
Lieutenant Colonel Thompson then attended the School of Advanced Warfighting, graduating in 2021, and executed his payback tour at Marine Forces Cyberspace Command. There he served as the G53 Plans Branch Head and finally as the Joint Task Force ARES/Joint Force Headquarters – Cyber (Marines) Chief of Plans until his selection for command.
Lieutenant Colonel Thompson took command of 3d Network Bn in June 2023.
Lieutenant Colonel Thompson’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (gold star), the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medals (gold star).
