Brigadier Litster is currently serving as the J5 Deputy Director for Policy, United States Indo-Pacific Command, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii.
He commissioned into the Royal Marines, September 1987 and trained as a commando infantry officer. He has served in a number of Royal Marines commando units and operational staffs over the last thirty years. His operational tours have included two years conducting maritime counter terrorism operations in Northern Ireland, a tour in the Balkans, two tours in Iraq (the first as UK LNO to I MEF during the initial invasion in 2003) and a deployment to Afghanistan.
His staff appointments have seen service as the Chief of Staff of HQ 3 Commando Brigade and as an SO1 in the counter terrorism department of the UK's Ministry of Defence. Litster has commanded Alpha Company 40 Commando Royal Marines as a Major and 43 Commando Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines as a Colonel. He is a graduate of the United Kingdom's Army Junior Staff Division and a Distinguished Graduate of the United States Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia.
In 2013, Brigadier Litster changed specialisation into the Defence Engagement career stream and was appointed as the United Kingdom's Attaché to the United States Marine Corps based at the British Embassy in Washington DC. During this period, Litster was responsible for all aspects of UK-USMC interoperability, including the future integration and deployment of USMC F35Bs into the UK’s Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers. Brigadier Litster’s subsequent appointment was as the United Kingdom's Defence Adviser to the Republic of South Africa with non-residential accreditation status as Defence Attaché to Angola and Defence Adviser for Namibia, Mozambique and Lesotho. He has been employed at the J5P in USINDOPACOM since September 2020.
Brigadier Litster’s service in Northern Ireland was recognised by the award of the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1994; he was then awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2009 for his service in Afghanistan.
Brigadier Litster is married to Helen, they have a Daughter who lives and works in London. His interests are sailing, skiing, mountaineering and hunting.
