Profile
Colonel Takagi currently serves as the Assistant Chief of Staff, Information Environment Division, at U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific, Hawaii. He has been selected to command II MEF Information Group, North Carolina, beginning in 2022.
Born in 1971 in Phoenix, Arizona, Takagi enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1992. He served through the rank of Staff Sergeant as a radio operator in Japan and in North Carolina. Takagi was commissioned in 1999, and assigned as a Communications Officer with 1st Battalion, 12th Marines and with 3d Marine Regiment in Hawaii.
Starting in 2005, Captain Takagi taught mathematics at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. There, he mentored the Semper Fi Society, and instituted Combat Fitness as an intramural sport.
In 2009, then Major Takagi was assigned to Marine Wing Communications Squadron 18 in Okinawa. He was chosen as the Marine Corps Aviation Association's Gibson Command and Control Officer of the Year in 2011. Soon after, he led the Marine Air Control Group detachment for Operation Tomodachi, conducting disaster relief after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
In 2012, Major Takagi served in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, alongside combined forces and contractors from the United States, United Kingdom, Jordan, and Bahrain. He then joined the U.S. Navy staff of Expeditionary Strike Group SEVEN, before being assigned to U.S. Embassy Jakarta, Indonesia, as the Marine Attaché.
In 2017, Lieutenant Colonel Takagi assumed command of Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38 in San Diego, California. In 2019, he joined Marine Corps Installations West as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Communications and Information Systems.
Takagi graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor's of Science degree, Magna Cum Laude and Honors, in Systems Engineering. Among other awards, he received the Wymore Award for Excellence in Systems and Industrial Engineering, and was named the Secretary of the Navy's Distinguished Graduate. Takagi received degrees of Master of Science with Distinction in Operations Analysis and Master of Business Administration with Distinction from the Naval Postgraduate School, where he was awarded the Monterey Peninsula Navy League Highest Academic Achievement Award and the Military Operations Research Society Award for Graduate Research. He was recognized at the Naval Academy with the Apgar Award for Excellence in Teaching. A joint qualified officer and graduate of the Air War College and of the Joint and Combined Warfighting School, Takagi is an adjunct instructor for the USMC Command and Staff College.
Takagi is a black belt instructor in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, and holds a black belt in Aikido. His hobbies include fishing, scuba diving, and photography. He is fluent in Spanish and Indonesian, and speaks basic Japanese. Takagi met his wife, the former Melissa Smith of Kailua, Hawaii, while attending Rice University. They have been married for 27 years and have two adult sons.
