Description

Approved for 2 CompTIA CEUs: A+

5G represents a promising new chapter in the evolution of wireless communications. Industry continues to make enormous investments into next-generation 5G technologies, hoping to deliver unprecedented wireless capabilities. The military domain appears eager to adopt advanced 5G technologies.  5G indeed presents a unique opportunity to provide enhanced networking capabilities to the military and enable a wide range of future applications and use cases. 5G promises extremely high data rates, very low latency, as well as greatly improved network scalability, reliability, and security. Furthermore, 5G offers a wide range of new feature sets and architectural enhancements to enable peer-to-peer communications and vehicular communications.

However, 5G is being designed for specific use cases and applications within 3GPP and industry and is not being designed explicitly for military applications. Consequently 5G may prove difficult to adopt by the military community and may have performance deficiencies when applied to military use cases.  Does 5G provide sufficient security for the military application? Is 5G well suited for tactical mobility? Does 5G provide sufficient robustness against jamming? Can 5G networks be made with ease-of-use and ease-of-management suitable for military deployment? How does DoD acquire and manage spectrum for 5G usage? These are just a few examples of the many questions and potential issues surrounding DoD adoption of 5G technology.

This panel will discuss the opportunities presented to the military community by 5G technology as well as the potential challenges of adopting this technology.
