Profile

BG Rainer Simon was born in Kirchen, Rhineland Palatinate, Germany on September 14, 1965 and graduated from high school in 1984. He began his military career as a conscript in the medical corps that same year and held numerous positions in different medical installations as a NCO until 1990.

In 1990 then Sergeant Simon changed into officers career and was commissioned an artillery officer with assignments as platoon leader and S2 in armoured artillery and mountain artillery units. In 1993 he changed branch becoming a signal officer. Between 1993 and 2000 he served as platoon and company commander in the 1st Mountain Division and the Airmobile Forces Command/4th Division, including a five month rotation as a signal company commander in Sarajevo, Bosnia in support of the NATO mission in the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia. Subsequently (1999) Cpt Simon was selected for the general staff course at the Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr (Bundeswehr Command and Staff College) in Hamburg.

From 2002 to 2005 Maj Simon held assignments as Principal Staff Officer G6 Ops at the Army Forces Command and Principal Staff Officer G2 Ops in the Army Office. He assumed command of Signal Battalion 4 in Regensburg in 2005 (LtCol).

In 2007 he served his first tour at the German MoD, Bonn, as Deputy Head of Branch Information Technology and IT Strategy, followed by a two year employment as the Military Assistant to the General Manager NC3A / NCIA in Brussels, Belgium. Between 2013 and 2016 COL Simon was assigned to the Special Forces Division/Rapid Forces Division as Division Head G6. During this time he deployed for seven months to HQ ISAF, Kabul, Afghanistan as the Senior Advisor “Training and Education” to the General Staff of AFG MoD.

In April 2016 he started his second tour in the MoD, this time Berlin, as Chief of Branch Information Technology, responsible for IT strategy and support to the MoD CIO. Between October 2016 – Jan 2018 COL Simon served as the Chief of Branch, Strategy & Governance in the newly established directorate general Cyber & Information Technology (CIT), responsible for IT-strategy, governance of the CIO, cyber policy and international relations.

In January 2018 he assumed responsibility as Chief J6 at the German Joint Force Operations Command for all IT related aspects of all DEU force deployments. In January 2020 COL Simon was been appointed Commander of the Bundeswehr IT school, Feldafing/Pöcking and was promoted to Brigadier General in December 2020.

His hobbies and interests include military history - especially antiquarian military books, woodworking and sports. BG Simon is married to his wife Liesel and they have one son, who is currently studying business informatics at the Berlin University.
