Colonel Byron Brown assumed command of the 1st Signal Brigade on July 2, 2024.
Commissioned into the U.S. Army Signal Corps in May 1999, COL Brown has served in a wide variety of Army, multinational, and joint positions across the United States, Germany, Korea, and the Middle East.
He previously served as a Presiding Officer for the Army Review Board Agency; Commander for the 59th Signal Battalion, 516th Signal Brigade in Alaska; and Commander for Bravo Company, 17th Signal Battalion, 22nd Signal Brigade in Kitzingen, Germany.
COL Brown’s staff experience includes Chief of Operations for the Joint Staff’s National Military Command Center and the National Joint Operations & Intelligence Center, Washington, D.C.; Special Technical Operations Officer for the Joint Staff J39; G6 for U.S. Army Alaska; Division Chief for the 8th Army G6, Korea; Capability Development Portfolio Manager (Protection, CWMD, EOD, and Robotics) for the HQDA G-3/5/7; S6 for the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood; Executive Officer for the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion in Columbus, Ohio; and the Current Operations & Exercises Officer for NATO’s Allied Land Component Command G6 in Heidelberg, Germany.
COL Brown’s operational deployments include two tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq and two tours in support of Operations Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
COL Brown is currently working on his Doctorate in Technology from Purdue University with an anticipated graduation in the Spring of 2026. He also holds a Master of Science in Campaign Planning & Strategy from the Joint Advanced Warfare School of the National Defense University as well as a Master of Arts in Information Technology Management from Webster University. His bachelor’s degree is in Electrical Engineering from Gannon University.
His awards and decorations include the Army Staff Identification Badge, the Joint Staff Identification Badge, the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Bronze Stars, two Defense Meritorious Service Medals, and five Army Meritorious Service Medals.
Colonel Brown is married to Ms. Sara Grace Shiner. His hobbies and interests include farming, equestrian activities, reading, and cooking.
