Princeton, New Jersey and Syracuse, New York (10/24/22) – Advanced wireless network engineering specialists, RIVA Networks (RIVA)—in partnership with JMA Wireless (JMA)—has been awarded a contract to add private 5G capabilities to the legacy cellular networks at the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), Rome Research Site (RRS). RIVA’s qualifications and experience, combined with JMA’s private 5G solution, will deliver a next-generation network to continue the modernization of United States Department of Defense (DoD) installations.

JMA will provide a private 5G network powered by XRAN, the world’s-only 100% software Radio Access Network (RAN) solution, along with technical support for AFRL in Rome, NY.  This includes delivering a complete 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) network with 4G and 5G Sub-6GHz and 5G millimeter wave radios.  RIVA will provide the engineering services to integrate JMA’s 5G network with AFRL’s existing legacy cellular networks to provide 5G mobile services.

Across the entire military, the DoD is aggressively engaging in programs to propel American 5G leadership. This mission-critical technology is compatible with any standard smartphone and paves the way for an increased use of mobile devices for federal agencies. The DoD intends to utilize the enhanced security protocols built into 5G to protect critical data, planning, and infrastructure.

According to RIVA’s Program Manager Jeff Lieb, “Based on testing and lessons learned over the last few years, JMA was selected as the best manufacturer to meet USAF/AFRL’s specific requirements.”

“RIVA is the ideal partner as we deploy the world’s most advanced private 5G network,” said Rishi Bhaskar, General Manager at JMA. “As the only U.S.-based company that designs, codes and manufactures our 5G products right here at home, we are proud to be part of the all-American team helping to restore the wireless-industry leadership our nation has lacked for so long.”

Powered by JMA’s 5G Standalone Wireless Network

SPRING LAKE, NC – Under the direction of Dr. Dilip Guha, Director of 5G Tactical Applications for OUSD R&E, Sherpa 6, Inc. (Sherpa 6) led the design, integration, and testing of a private 5G mobile network showcasing tactical edge applications for US armed servicemembers. The Sherpa 6 network team, led by Vince Graffagnino and partnered with global wireless leader JMA Wireless, successfully demonstrated on September 14 that 5G mobile capabilities can increase operational and tactical efficiency for Soldiers on the frontlines.

The demonstration was a daylong event at a Sherpa 6 facility near Fort Bragg, NC, showcasing various military applications and programs over JMA’s 5G standalone wireless system connected to the U.S. Army’s Integrated Tactical Network (ITN). The Army relies on the ITN to provide secure, resilient communications in any environment. Sherpa 6 and JMA Wireless successfully showed that the low-latency and increased bandwidth provided by 5G wireless enhances the strategic applications of the ITN for the troops.

Sherpa 6 Chief Executive Officer Joe Dames stated, “Sherpa 6 is proud to support the critical DoD 5G Wireless cross cutting mission-set. Based on our past success in architecting the Army’s ITN we continue to bring industry-leading mission expertise and innovation to DoD 5G wireless initiatives to meet immediate and future Warfighter needs.”

Sherpa 6 Senior Program Manager Craig Peton stated, “The event conducted at our Spring Lake facility underscored to attending stakeholders, including active-duty soldiers, the many tangible benefits that a 5G standalone mobile network can bring to critical tactical applications used by Warfighters today and into the future. The JMA-based architecture designed by Sherpa 6 showcased how a significant increase in bandwidth and reduced latency can expand the capabilities of existing applications and open up possibilities for developing new applications we haven’t even thought of yet.”

Among the variety of capabilities highlighted, the demonstration featured a mobile device security application called Watchtower, sensor-to-shooter applications, real-time tracking, and video and machine learning algorithms previously limited by antiquated tactical networks.

JMA Wireless GM Rishi Bhaskar stated, “Sherpa 6 knows what it means to serve and understands what soldiers need. Together, our 100% US-based team is making private 5G possible for those on the frontlines – connecting soldiers in ways and places that weren’t possible before.”

The program was funded by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (OUSD) and managed by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM).

Dr. Dilip Guha stated, “This program is funded to show edge computing capability for Joint All Domain C2 (JADC2)/ITN Intelligent Nodes at the tactical edge supported by 5G high-bandwidth and low latency transport, and BLOS reach back to the Warfighter to perform manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) and sensor-to-shooter operations.”

  • Why 5G Is DOD’s Communications Platform of the Future: Executive Mosaic & JMA Wireless Video

    VIDEOhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JdLPgb6nfY

As 5G communications technology advances, it’s opening up a new world of capabilities for missions across the defense landscape and within the public sector. In a new exclusive video interview, JMA Wireless’ Rishi Bhaskar sat down with Executive Mosaic to talk about what’s on the horizon for 5G innovation and why it’s so important at this moment.

“5G is really a technology that's expected to revolutionize the way we communicate, both in our commercial and personal lives, but maybe more so importantly in our industrial and business world as well. We expect 5G to become the platform of communication of the future for DOD,” said Bhaskar, a senior vice president and general manager at JMA Wireless, in conversation with Executive Mosaic’s Summer Myatt.

In recent years, the Department of Defense has placed heavy emphasis on modernization, and it is currently undertaking a wide range of modernization efforts to support its most critical missions. Bhaskar cited documents like the Navy’s Force Design 2030 as clear indications of the DOD’s commitment to enterprise-wide modernization.

“We believe 5G as a platform of communication actually enables that modernization at scale. And the nice thing about being able to leverage a technology like 5G to be that communication platform is we are now finally enabling the department to take advantage of global economies of scale,” he explained.

According to Bhaskar, 5G is allowing JMA to harness the past few decades of research and development to build platform solutions for the Pentagon. In addition to benefits like increased reliability and security, 5G also allows these platforms to consolidate siloed networks into a single environment. “The long-term total cost of ownership will drop significantly as we build 5G platform solutions for modernization of use cases for the department,” said Bhaskar, and some of these use cases include enhanced command and control as well as operations and tactical planning.
