Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) such as vehicles, military platforms, and the power grid existed before cyber came along. Cyber has brought tremendous performance gains, operational flexibility, reduced operational cost, and faster technology refresh. However, it has brought new threats from cyber attacks and coordinated cyber and physical attacks. Consequences of cyber attacks in such systems could have devastating impacts on human lives as well as the mission and the time between attack and consequences could be very short. Architecture, design, and operations of such systems should build in resilience, meaning the system itself should minimize the impact of any cyber attack autonomously, and not wait for the typical (too slow) detect, isolate, and recover approach used for enterprise cyber systems. In addition to providing this autonomic cyber resilience (ACR) at the system architecture and design stages, we should look at the cyber and physical together to add coordinated controls to further improve the resilience. The panelists have different experiences on this topic and they will discuss different approaches, challenges, and successes. To make this panel session more interactive and lively, close to 50% of the time will be devoted to addressing questions and comments from the audience.
