Major Tyler R. Johnson, a native of Carrier Mills, Illinois, currently serves as the Battalion Executive Officer, 1-187th Infantry Regiment “Leader”, 3rd Mobile Brigade “Rakkasans”, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
MAJ Johnson began his career in 2004 as an enlisted infantry soldier and attended Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He then served in 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006. MAJ Johnson then served in 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2008.
MAJ Johnson commissioned from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 2013 as an infantry officer. He served as a lieutenant in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) as a Battalion Adjutant, Rifle Platoon Leader, and Company Executive Officer. Following Maneuver Captain’s Career Course (MCCC) in 2017, MAJ Johnson was stationed at Fort Stewart where he was the Battalion S4 and Assistant Operations Officer for 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 2nd Armor Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division and then commanded Charlie Company and later Headquarters Company in 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment. MAJ Johnson deployed the Battalion to Operation Defender Europe 2020 as the Battalion Operations Officer.
MAJ Johnson then transitioned to the National Capital Region (NCR) as a member of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment “Old Guard”. He served as the Regimental Assistant Operations Officer, focused on 59th Presidential Inauguration as the lead planner for Task Force Capital and Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) within the NCR. During this time, MAJ Johnson was selected for the Omar Bradley Fellowship in Washington, D.C.
MAJ Johnson received his Master of Policy Management in 2022 from Georgetown University from the McCourt School of Public Policy. Following Georgetown, MAJ Johnson served as the Special Assistant to the 20th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as a member of the Chairman’s Action Group – Engagements. He planned, prepared, and executed official domestic and international engagements in support of strategic objectives. MAJ Johnson then served as a Strategic Planner for Headquarters Department of the Army (HQDA) G-3/5/7, Army Integration Group (AIG). His focus areas were Transform in Contact (TiC), Army 2030, and Europe Theater of Operations.
In 2024 MAJ Johnson returned to the 101st Airborne Division, where he assumed the duties of Operational Planner within the Eagle Continuous Transformation Office (ECTO).
MAJ Johnson’s military education includes Command and General Staff College, Maneuver Captain’s Career Course, Infantry Officer Basic Course, Basic Airborne School, Air Assault School, and Ranger School. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Staff Identification Badge, Army Staff Identification Badge, German Proficiency Badge (Gold Award), Expert Infantryman Badge, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
He is married to Ashly Johnson, and they have three children, Landon, Rileigh, and Aiden, while also raising his wife’s half-sister, Jerica.
