Salt Lake City, UT – June 17, 2025. WGU grew from humble beginnings in 1997 to the largest university in the United States based on a simple idea – quality higher education should be affordable and accessible to everyone. It’s no coincidence that WGU also became one of the largest education providers to our nation’s Servicemembers; we live by the motto – Military-Focused, Student Obsessed. Almost 50,000 service members, military family members, and veterans attended WGU last year, and 6,950 graduated with their bachelor’s or master’s degrees.
WGU’s competency-based and self-paced education model is especially suited for the rigors and unpredictability of military life. Service members know this as “training to standard, not to time”. Students study and take exams on their schedule anywhere in the world with an internet connection, regardless of the time zone, which is particularly important during PCSs and deployments. Our one-of-a-kind mentor program ensures that our students are never alone with weekly progress and wellness check-ins.
We designed all our degree programs to provide working adults with the skills employers need at about half the tuition cost of conventional universities. Each WGU IT bachelor’s program includes numerous industry certifications from CompTIA, Microsoft, Axelos, Linux, Cisco, AWS, and others, with testing vouchers included in the tuition for no additional fees.
WGU developed the Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance degree program with input from cybersecurity experts and leading IT employers to meet the most recent Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and National Security Agency (NSA) guidelines. As a result, the NSA designated WGU a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense through 2026. WGU is also proud to be an AFCEA Preferred Education Provider.
WGU, like most other high-quality universities, is certified to accept federal and state tuition, military tuition assistance, and Veterans Administration education benefits and participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program. WGU offers many scholarship opportunities, awarding 2,273 scholarships to military-affiliated students in the past year, totaling almost $6.6 million. WGU is proud to have been recognized by Military Friendly® for fifteen consecutive years and designated a Gold School for 2025-2026 and a 2025-2026 Top 10 School for Military Spouses. Military Times also selected WGU for its 2024-2025 Best for Vets: Colleges list.
WGU’s mission is to change lives for the better by creating pathways to opportunity for our nation’s most deserving citizens – military service members, veterans, and their families.
