Small businesses are at the forefront of advancing information technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity in support of Department of Defense (DoD) priorities. These firms are instrumental in tackling emerging defense technology challenges, offering innovative solutions in areas such as threat detection, automation, and predictive analytics. Programs like SBIR/STTR, the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), and the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) provide critical support and oversight, helping small businesses navigate complex requirements. Flexible entry points through Other Transaction Authorities (OTAs) and innovation hubs like AFWERX further enhance access to defense contracting opportunities. While cyber compliance requirements drive improvements in security standards, they can also pose significant barriers for resource-constrained small firms. The 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and expanded DoD small business initiatives are expected to strengthen future engagement, reinforcing the essential role of small businesses in shaping the defense sector’s technological future.
