Colonel Michael R. Wacker currently serves as the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence (CCOE) Strategic Planner. He received his commission as a Signal Corps Officer from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA in 2001. He is a graduate of the Signal Corps Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Command and General Staff College, the School of Advanced Military Studies, and the United States Army War College.
Prior to his arrival at CCOE, COL Wacker served on the Joint Staff J6 as the Cybersecurity, Modernization, and Governance Division Chief, Washington D.C. COL Wacker’s previous assignments include Platoon Leader and Executive Officer, C Co, 124th Signal Battalion, Fourth Infantry Division, and Squadron S6 with 4th Squadron, 9th U.S. Cavalry, Fort Cavazos, Texas. COL Wacker served as Company Commander of Bravo Company, Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division (“Black Jack”) during OIF 06-08. During his field grade time, he served as a Signal Captains Career course instructor, Aide-de-Camp, Battalion S3, and Battalion XO for the 442nd Signal Battalion at Fort Eisenhower, GA. Upon completion of CGSC and SAMS, COL Wacker served as a G35 FUOPS and G5 planner at III Corps, Fort Cavazos, Texas where he also deployed as the CJTF-OIR J6 Network Operations chief. COL Wacker also served as a strategic planner with 7th Signal Command (NETCOM) at Fort Eisenhower, GA. Prior to Senior Service College, COL Wacker was assigned to the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss, Texas, where he served as the 1AD G6 and the United States Forces-Afghanistan J6 Director of Operations in Bagram, Afghanistan.
COL Wacker’s deployments include Operation Iraqi Freedom (3), Operation Inherent Resolve, and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, Afghanistan.
COL Wacker’s civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Central Missouri. His military education consists of the Signal Officer Basic Course, Signal Captain’s Career Course, Command and General Staff College, Masters in Military Science from the Advanced Military Studies Program and a Masters degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star (1 OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (1 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), Joint Army Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal.
COL Wacker is married to the former Robin Commings of Lampasas, TX and they have four children.
