Profile

COL Michael Hammerstrom most recently served as the Commander of the United States Army Cyber Protection Brigade at Fort Gordon, Georgia from October 2018 to October 2020.

COL Hammerstrom was commissioned in Field Artillery upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Sciences from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1994. He holds a Master of Science degree in Defense Analysis, with a concentration in Irregular Warfare from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Master in Military Arts and Science degree from the US Army’s School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS). He earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.

COL Hammerstrom was first assigned to the 1st Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas and served as an Armor Company Fire Support Officer (FSO), Fire Direction Officer, Platoon Leader, the Assistant Brigade FSO and an Armor Battalion FSO. Next, he served as an Infantry Battalion FSO, the Battalion S1, and the Commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Support Battery, 2nd Battalion, 11th Field Artillery at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. In 2002, he became a Civil Affairs (CA) Team Leader assigned to the 96th Civil Affairs Battalion at Fort Bragg, NC. Following this assignment, COL Hammerstrom served as the Deputy J39 in the Special Operations Command-Pacific at Camp Smith, Hawaii. In 2010, he served in ISAF Joint Command (IJC) in Kabul, Afghanistan as the Campaign Plan Planner and Manager. Following IJC, he was assigned to U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) as the J39 and Army Element Commander at Fort Meade, Maryland. Then, he served as the J39, J35, and the Commander of the Special Operations Command-Forward for Central Africa (SOCFWD-CA) while assigned to Special Operations Command-Africa in Stuttgart, Germany. Prior to command, he served as the Deputy Commanding Officer, Joint Force Headquarters-Cyber (JFHQ-C) at Fort Gordon, Georgia.

COL Hammerstrom’ s operational experience and deployments include multiple missions in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and throughout the Pacific Region, including two tours in Afghanistan and a tour in Central Africa.

His awards and decorations include Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with an oak leaf cluster, the Joint Service Achievement Medal with an oak leaf cluster, and the Army Achievement Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters. He has earned the Airborne Badge and Army Basic Space Badge.

COL Hammerstrom is married to Gayla and they have two sons, Kai and Cadon.
