Description

Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) environments have coexisted for many years with some level of separation and distinction. Many critical infrastructure sectors have seen the IT and OT worlds converge from a technology perspective many years ago and in recent years there has been a new type of convergence occurring within IT and OT from the perspective of organization charts with a blending of personnel and leadership across traditional IT and OT areas of a company. These blended, dotted line organizations are pushed to balance the insatiable business hunger for operational data and providing support for the operational processes which rely on a wide variety of business inputs for critical functions. Many critical infrastructure entities have implemented interconnected and interdependent systems of systems that cross traditional IT and OT environments to a degree where a new category of assets needs to be discussed. There are a host of systems that exist in the middle of traditional IT environments and OT environments that need to be understood from an impact and risk perspective in critical infrastructure. In this talk we will look at case studies, architectures, systems of concern, longer term risks, and how to think about defending and responding to attacks on these operations supporting IT systems and business enabling OT systems.
