Major General Thomas A. Pugh is from Signal Mountain, Tennessee. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1990 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.
Upon completion of the Signal Officer Basic Course at Fort Gordon, Georgia in November 1990, Major General Pugh was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Fort Drum, New York. He first served as the Battalion Signal Officer for 2nd Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment. He was then assigned to 10th Signal Battalion, where he served as a platoon leader in Bravo Company and then as the Assistant S3.
After graduating the Signal Officer Advance Course at Fort Gordon in October 1995, he was assigned as the Plans Officer for 7th Signal Brigade in Mannheim, Germany. In June 1997, he took command of Alpha Company, 44th Signal Battalion, 7th Signal Brigade.
Major General Pugh returned to Fort Gordon in January 1999 and served as a Small Group Leader for the Signal Captain’s Career Course until 2001.
After graduating the Command and General Staff College in 2002, Major General Pugh was assigned as the Operations Officer for the 35th Signal Brigade (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He became the S3 for the 35th Signal Brigade (Airborne) in May 2003. In the summer of 2006, he became the Director of Plans and Operations for the XVIII Airborne Corps G6.
Major General Pugh took command of the 2nd Joint Communications Squadron, Joint Communications Support Element (Airborne) at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida in May 2007, where he served until June 2010.
In April 2013, Major General Pugh assumed Command of the 35th Signal Brigade (Theater) (Tactical) at Fort Gordon, Georgia until June 2013. Major General Pugh graduated from the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama in May 2014.
In August 2014, he became the 37th Chief of Signal and the Commandant of the US Army Signal School at Fort Gordon, Georgia.
In 2016, Major General Pugh was assigned to Headquarters, United States European Command in Stuttgart, Germany where he served as the Director for Command, Control, Communications and Computers (C4) and the Director for the Joint Cyber Center until 2018.
Major General Pugh’s awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (1 OLC), Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLCs), Army Commendation Medal (1 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), Joint Meritorious Unit Award (1 OLC), Meritorious Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal (1 service star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (1 service star), Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service ribbon (4), the Parachutist badge and the Air Assault Badge. Major General Pugh is authorized to wear the German Parachutist Badge.
