Sergeant Major Richard D. Knott assumed duties as the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-6 Sergeant Major on April 16, 2021.

SGM Knott is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1990 as a 31M (Multichannel Communications Systems Operator). He attended Basic Training at Fort Jackson, SC and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia.

SGM Knott has held every leadership position from Team Chief to Nominative Command Sergeant Major. His previous assignments include 121st Signal Battalion, Fort Riley, Kansas; 122nd Signal Battalion, Camp Casey, Korea; 10th Signal Battalion, Fort Drum, New York; 385th Signal Company, Camp Doha, Kuwait; Indianapolis Recruiting Battalion, Indianapolis, Indiana; two tours with 123rd Signal Battalion, Fort Stewart, Georgia; First Sergeant, 1/13th Infantry Regiment, Fort Jackson, South Carolina; First Sergeant, 304th Signal Battalion, Camp Stanley, Korea; First Sergeant, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, Fort Stewart, Georgia; Operations Sergeant Major, 1st Signal Brigade, Yongsan, Korea; S3 Sergeant Major, 42d Fires Brigade, Fort Stewart, Georgia; Command Sergeant Major, 63d Expeditionary Signal Battalion, Fort Stewart, Georgia; Command Sergeant Major, 516th Signal Brigade, Fort Shafter, Hawaii; and Command Sergeant Major, United States Army Signal School, Fort Gordon, Georgia. SGM Knott’s most recent assignment was as the Command Sergeant Major of Network Enterprise Technology Command, Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

SGM Knott’s education includes all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development System to include the Nominative Leader Course, U.S. Army Sergeant Major Academy Class 62, First Sergeant Course, Army Instructors Course, Army Recruiter Course, Drill Sergeant Course, and the Army Force Management Course. He holds a master’s in human resource management and a bachelor’s in Business Administration.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (2 oak leaf clusters (2OLC)), Bronze Star Medal (1OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (1 silver leaf cluster (SLC)), Army Commendation Medal (5OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1SLC, 3OLC), the Presidential Unit Citation, the Army Superior Unit Award, the Army Good Conduct Medal (9th award), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Korean Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with Bronze Star, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, NCO Professional Development (6), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (4), Drill Sergeant Badge, Gold Recruiter Badge (3 Sapphires), Gold Recruiter’s Ring. SGM Knott is married and has two adult children.
