The Joint Communication Simulation System (JCSS) is a network performance analysis tool developed by DISA's Computing Modeling and Simulation Analysis Branch (OC-EE) and fielded to Department of Defense (DoD). JCSS provides a broad range of high-fidelity models, allowing users to analyze strategic, operational, and tactical military communications networks. The initial focus of JCSS was network and application performance optimization across the DoD Information Network (DoDIN). Recent investments in cyber modeling focus on modeling cyber-attack vectors, diagnosing vulnerabilities, and reducing the overall effects in current network architectures.
Three specific cyber modeling use cases will demonstrated:
1. Will demonstrate JCSS capability to model automated identification and response to a DDOS attack. The DDOS attack will be modeled using JCSS's cyber-attack models. The JCSS IDS model will flag the traffic as suspicious, IDS flag will trigger configuration of an ACL on the premise router to block the attack address. The model will help engineers prove IDS and SDN rule sets and estimate the time to eliminate .an attack
2. Will demonstrate the effects of a cyber-attack on current services. The demo will explore if redundancy can aid in reducing the effects of a cyber-attack.
3. Will focus on electronic warfare. The simulation will show the effects of jamming on communications and explore frequency hopping techniques to alleviate the effects of the jammer.
