  • Kratos Delivers Virtual Machine-Based Satellite Ground Communications Architecture for Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS)

Resilient, Cost-effective Virtual Architecture is Secure and Scalable Across Multiple U.S. Government Command and Control Programs

SAN DIEGO, CA, Feb. 27, 2018 – Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq: KTOS), a leading National Security Solutions provider, announced today that its subsidiary, Kratos RT Logic, delivered a virtual machine software satellite ground communications solution that commands the payload of the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) SATCOM satellites. Boeing’s Global SATCOM Configuration Control Element (GSCCE) Evolution program chose Kratos’ virtual solution to replace an older command and control technology.

The delivery includes virtual machine software versions of Kratos’ Front End Processor (vFEP) and Gateway (vGTW) systems. The vFEPs and vGTWs are installed and run in Virtual Machines (VMs) on customer supplied classified and unclassified commercial rack mounted blade servers. The delivery includes 40 vFEPs and 40 vGTW installations, enabling control of a fleet of up to 14 satellites from 5 operation centers supporting 28 separate command and control missions.

Kratos is leveraging its Information Assurance (IA) hardening service with their virtual machine software products to deliver an integrated security solution meeting the demanding requirements of DoD mission systems. The virtual architecture solution gives the power to control a fleet of satellites from multiple operation centers supporting separate command and control missions and also provides control and status of the KS-252 crypto on Boeing’s GSCCE Evolution program.

"The move to a virtual machine-based architecture is part of Kratos’ strategy to deliver resilient, cost-effective ground architectures that are more robust, provide for enhanced space situational awareness (SSA). It will support the Air Force's Space Enterprise Vision (SEV) with native compatibility for Enterprise Ground Services (EGS) and the Air Force's Enterprise Space Battle Management Command and Control system (BMC2) now being developed," said Frank Backes, VP of Business Development for Kratos RT Logic.

  • OS IA Hardening
A set of common baseline operating systems that are fully patched and maintained quarterly in accordance with DISA Security Technical Implementation Guide hardening requirements for the operating system and common applications: Apache, and Firefox....

  • Kratos understands the importance of Information Assurance (IA) system hardening to our government and commercial customers, as well as the challenges associated with adhering to security requirements in an operational environment. Kratos provides a set of common baseline operating systems (e.g., openSUSE, Red Hat® Enterprise Linux®, CentOS, Arch Linux®) that are fully patched and maintained quarterly in accordance with DISA Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) hardening requirements for the operating system (OS) and common applications: Apache, and Firefox.

Kratos has an extensive portfolio of proven project performance, executing IA hardening on more than 50 customer programs in accordance with DISA STIG guidelines. The mature IA hardening process is designed to ensure that customer security requirements are met on-time and on a firm-fixed-price budget. Performing operating system (OS) hardening and installing OS patches on operational SATCOM equipment can sometimes introduce unexpected changes to the system that have a negative impact on mission application functionality or performance. Troubleshooting such issues can be difficult in an operational environment and may require recompilation of mission application source code, firmware, or device drivers to correct.

Kratos IA Engineers harden the OS per DISA STIGs using automated tools such as proprietary Kratos hardening scripts, ACAS, and Nessus, as well as manual processes and procedures, to ensure STIG and Information Assurance Vulnerability Management (IAVM) compliance. The mission application(s) are installed on the hardened system and tested in a lab environment using a library of automated test scripts (e.g. TestStand and shell scripts) along with manual test procedures as needed to perform mission application testing. When necessary, Kratos IA engineers engage mission application software engineers to help troubleshoot and correct any IA/OS patch induced errors. Following the completion of the test/resolve phase, installation media and documentation is finalized, all artifacts are checked into a Kratos configuration management system, and the complete hardened solution is delivered as a formal quarterly release.
