Colonel Katolin joined the Marine Corps in 1999 and received his commission as a Communications Officer in 2002. He deployed multiple times to Iraq, serving as the S-6 for 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment in Al Qaim.
After serving on the staff at Second Fleet Command, Colonel Katolin joined 9th Communication Battalion and commanded B Company. The company deployed to Afghanistan and facilitated communications for the I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) (FWD) Command Element for Regional Command (South West).
Upon returning from Afghanistan, Colonel Katolin became a Faculty Advisor at the Marine Corps’ Expeditionary Warfare School, where he earned the Elihu Rose Award for teaching excellence. Following his tour at EWS, he served as the Operations Officer for 9th Communication Battalion for two years. He then attended the School of Advanced Warfighting and reported to the Deputy Commandant for Information.
For his final assignment in the Fleet Marine Force, Colonel Katolin commanded Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28. He developed the first Information Maneuver SOP in the Marine Corps. The Department of Navy’s Chief Information Officer recognized the squadron with the Information Technology Excellence award for an innovative information watch floor used during the NATO exercise Cold Response, which yielded real-world benefits against peer threats in the region.
Colonel Katolin is a 3rd Degree Black Belt Martial Arts Instructor Trainer in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. He initiated and co-authored Marine Corps Doctrinal Publication (MCDP) 8, Information, and is currently authoring doctrine on Ethics in War. He recently graduated from the National War College with a Master of Science in National Security Strategy and holds a PhD in Planning, Governance, and Globalization from Virginia Tech’s School of Governance and International Relations. Currently, he serves as the Assistant Chief of Staff G-3, Operations Officer, for Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command.
