CDR Amy Alexander, RN

UK Liaison Officer
Defense Information Systems Agency

Profile

Having graduated with a BA in Physics from Oxford University Alexander joined the Royal Navy (RN) at Britannia Royal Naval College in September 1998. Following initial training her first appointment was to the Engineer (Training Management) team at HMS Collingwood instructing future Naval Weapons Engineering Technicians at the RN School of Weapon Engineering.

Transferring to the Weapon Engineering branch at the end of this appointment Alexander successfully completed the RN System Engineering and Management Course in December 2002 and was subsequently appointed to HMS ALBION, a first of class LPD, in the final stages of build. During this assignment she was exposed to the many challenges of bringing a vessel into service and helping to form and lead a new Ship’s company.

Following this first operational assignment Alexander was posted to an engineering support role with responsibility for delivering a new Command System into service for RN Mine Countermeasures Vessels. In 2016 she completed the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Maritime), before serving as the Co-ordinator for the 2* Senior British Military Advisor in US Central Command, Tampa, Florida.

Promoted Lieutenant Commander in 2008, Alexander joined the Type 45 Destroyer Delivery Team at the BAE shipyard in Glasgow and, putting her experience of new build vessels to immediate use, was part of the acceptance team for the then new Type 45 Class being delivered into service. This challenging role, specializing in acceptance of weapons, sensors and communications systems, was followed by a move into the Joint Environment of the Ministry of Defense (MOD) capability
management HQ for communications and ICT. This assignment included a 6 month tour of duty acting as the Information Systems and Services representative at the embedded UK Joint Force CIS HQ in Afghanistan.

Further training to prepare Alexander for sub-unit Command as Head of the Weapon Engineering Department in the Type 45 Destroyer HMS Daring followed. This successful tour of duty involved leading her team through operations that included a multi-national missile firing trial in the Pacific and an operational deployment to the Middle East.

In 2013 Alexander moved back to the Naval acquisition and support arena spending 2 years as the System Engineer for the Type 45 Sea Viper Weapons System. She also served as the Military Assistant to the 2* Director Weapons in the MOD Acquisition and Support Organization, a challenging and rewarding role during a period of significant organizational transformation and spent a period with a newly established, small cross-government team, focused on development and delivery of Full Spectrum Effects; the precursor to Fusion Doctrine.

Selected for promotion to Commander in 2017, Alexander graduated from the Advanced Command and Staff Course before joining UK Strategic Command as the Capability Sponsor for Official, Secret and Above Secret ICT and the Global Connectivity Programme. A post as a Military Advisor to the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) was then followed by a year at the University of Cranfield, studying for an MSc in Cyber Strategy. Currently Amy is the UK Liaison Officer to the Defense Information System Agency based at Fort Meade.

Prior to moving to the USA, Amy lived in rural Somerset maintaining an active lifestyle of running and daily walks with a neighbour’s dog. Her interest include travel, skiing and fine dining when time allows.
