Colonel Michael T. “Mick” McDaniel commands the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Global Field Command headquartered at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois with units and activities at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, and Columbus, Ohio.
The command is responsible for delivering and defending the Department of Defense Information Network (DoDIN) Area of Operations DISA. In this role, the command operates and defends the DoD’s transport-layer network, outer boundary Internet Access Points, Joint Regional Security Stacks (JRSS), and multiple endpoint cyber defenses across the DoDIN. DISA Global also oversees the DoD’s domain name services as well as one of 13 Internet G-root Domain Name Servers. The command controls and manages these missions through the Orion Operations Center enterprise, one of the DoD’s premier cyberspace operations capabilities.
Colonel McDaniel commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in December of 2000. His previous assignments include expeditionary and fixed-based communications units, Headquarters Air Force, DISA, and U.S. Cyber Command in addition to a presidential support assignment with the White House Communications Agency. Colonel McDaniel previously commanded the 39th Communications Squadron at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey as well as the 92nd Cyberspace Operations Squadron and the 567th Cyberspace Operations Group, at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 2000. In addition, he holds a Master of Science degree in telecommunications management from the University of Maryland, University College, Adelphi, Maryland as well as Master of Military Operational Art and Science, Master of Philosophy in Military Strategy, and Master of Strategic Studies degrees from Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. Colonel McDaniel’s awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Joint Service Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and the Air Force Achievement Medal.
