MAJ David A. Courter received his commission in May 2007 from the New Mexico Military Institute where he received an Associates of Arts in History. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in History at Salisbury University, Maryland. He also holds a Master of Military Arts and Sciences in Strategic Studies from the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
After graduating from the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course in 2010, MAJ Courter’s first assignment was with the 3rd Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. There he served as a Fire Support Officer, Fire Direction Officer, Platoon leader and assistant Battalion S3; this assignment included two deployments to Afghanistan. His second assignment was as an assistant Battalion S3 and Batter Commander in 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery Regiment. As a result of the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division’s inactivation MAJ Courter stayed on Fort Benning and served as an Infantry One Station Unit Training Company Commander in 2nd Battalion, 58th Infantry Regiment. Upon completion of company command, MAJ Courter served as a theater fires planner in the combined and joint fires element in Seoul, South Korea.
While attending the Command and General Staff Officers Course at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, MAJ Courter transitioned to Functional Area 59 Army Strategist. Upon complete of staff college, MAJ Courter attended the Basic Strategic Art Course at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. As a strategist MAJ Courter has served as the Deputy G5 and G5 in the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, Joint-Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, Hawaii. He currently serves as the Chief of Combatant Command Plan Integration in the Defense Information System Agency J-5.
MAJ Courter’s military education includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Field Artillery Captain’s Career Course, US Army Command and General Staff Officer Course, Basic Strategic Art Program, and the Defense Strategists Course. He also holds a strategists and joint planner additional skill identifier.
MAJ Courter’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (4), and Army Achievement Medal. He is authorized to wear the Combat Action Badge and Joint Meritorious Unit Award.
