Profile

Scarlett Swerdlow is a senior technical strategist in the Defense Information Systems Agency’s Emerging Technology Directorate. In this position, she advises the agency on data with a current focus on defensive cyber operations.
Prior to her current role at DISA, Swerdlow served as a digital service expert at Defense Digital Service (DDS), the Department of Defense’s “SWAT team of nerds.” At DDS, she focused on freeing data from legacy systems. Her efforts included developing a platform to stream data from base defense systems for counter-drone operations, as well as building a “pixel pipeline” for the Defense Health Agency to digitize the world’s largest collection of human tissue samples for cutting-edge medical research.
Swerdlow has worked as a data scientist, data science manager, and director of data science. She has helped organizations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the American Red Cross, the State of Illinois, and the Fire Department of the City of New York to use data to improve their operations. She also served as adjunct faculty at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
Swerdlow has a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago Harris School and a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
