The following schools will be presenting during the Innovation Showcase, held Monday through Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. each day, in South Pacific Ballroom 1 in the Mid-Pacific Conference Center.
Junior Chamber International
Hawaii’s Premier Drone Racing STEM Program. The Aeronautical Engineering and Robotics Program (AERo), is a next-generation STEM-based program utilizing quadcopter technology, blending robotics education with the thrill and excitement of drone racing. The program is designed to give students a conceptual understanding of newtonian mechanics, fluid dynamics, and electricity & magnetism. Participating students in the AERo Program will be tasked to design and build their team’s quadcopter to racing specifications. Students will also have the opportunity to experience our Flight Academy, which will teach them the knowledge of quadcopter safety, best practices, and expertise in FPV drone racing. With their knowledge and expertise gained through the AERo Program, program participants will be well prepared for rapidly expanding future career pathways and higher education opportunities. MATHCOUNTS
A Nationwide math competition for students in 6th-8th grade and has been running for 39 years in Hawaii. Three out of every four competitors will go on to study a STEM related field in college. Students participate first locally in their own schools, then compete among chapters across the country, then top students from each chapter compete state wide, until the top teams come together to determine each year's national champion at the national competition. MATHCOUNTS programs are designed so that students can embrace challenges and expand their academic and career opportunities in the future during what MATHCOUNTS believes to be a critical juncture when a love of math must be encouraged and a fear of math must be overcome. There are many paths to succeed in math, and MATHCOUNTS aims to help all students discover theirs.
Oceanit
Tech Petting Zoo. Learn and play with Aloha AI applications that will transform you into a piece of art, or create your own masterpiece by drawing in the air with just your finger. Use your hands as game controllers to play a game, or have AI guess your age and gender. We'll also have coding with the Altino car and information about the upcoming 3-credit workshops for teachers.
Kalani High School
Team Magma encourages its members to establish, evaluate and refine goals about Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) while practicing gracious professionalism. The goal is to create an environment that prepares future leaders and engineers for the real world by providing opportunities for STEAM experience. Team Magma also works towards spreading STEAM ideas outside of the team by providing resources and education to aspiring engineers to form a solid foundation early on.
St Louis High School
They will be presenting their FIRST and VEX robots at the STEM room. Hopefully our recap video will be completed by then which we can put up on a monitor as well. We’ll also showcase our nearly complete CAD model. For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) is an international youth organization that operates the FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST LEGO League Challenge, FIRST LEGO League Explore, FIRST LEGO League Discover, and FIRST Tech Challenge competitions.[4] Founded by Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers in 1989, its expressed goal is to develop ways to inspire students in engineering and technology fields. Its philosophy is expressed by the organization as Coopertition and Gracious Professionalism. FIRST also operates FIRST Place, a research facility at FIRST Headquarters in Manchester, New Hampshire, where it holds educational programs and day camps for students and teachers. VEX Robotics is educational robotics for everyone. VEX solutions span all levels of both formal and informal education with accessible, scalable, and affordable solutions. Beyond science and engineering principles, VEX encourages creativity, teamwork, leadership, and problem solving among groups. It allows educators of all types to engage and inspire the STEM problem solvers of tomorrow!
Highlands Middle School
Students will explain and show sample projects for Science and Engineering Fair, SeaPerch Underwater Robotics, and Science Olympiad.
Navy Information Warfare Center (NIWC)
We'll have our backdrop display to show case some of the work we do. The STEM kits we'll bring includes the following:
Laser Transmitter: Demonstrates how a communication system works. The audio signal out of the phone starts off analog. It goes through an analog-to-digital (a/d) converter. This signal is then converted to laser pulses that are beamed through air to a light sensor. From there it goes into a d/a converter changing it back to an analog electrical signal. This goes into the speaker where it is finally converted back to sound.
Conductivity Stick: Hold onto one end of the conductivity stick with one hand and the other end with your other hand. When you complete the electrical circuit with your body the LEDs light up with accompanying sound effects. You can even make a conduction loop through two people.
Energy Box: Ideal as a battery alternative for a wide variety of basic electricity experiments, hand crank generators provide a low voltage power source that lets you create electrical current by simply turning a crank. These devices generate up to 15 volts of direct current. Light up some LEDs or bulb, start a fan, buzz a buzzer, even power up your (old) IPOD.
Chladni Plate: All objects have a set of nature frequencies at which they vibrate, and each frequency is associated with a standing wave pattern as can be seen by the salt on the Chladni plate. As the plate vibrates, the salt begins to tumble about until it reaches points along the plate that are not vibrating, which are the nodal positions.
Virtual Reality (VR) Goggles: Enables the wearer to see three dimensional images which give an illusion of depth of perception.
Hawaii Space Grant Consortium and Hawaii Space Flight Lab
They will be displaying projects initiated to develop a K-12 and Undergraduate pipeline to prepare students for the technical workforce. HSGC will have on display VEX IQ robots and a slideshow demonstrating the Hawaii VEX Robotics program. HSGC provides support to teachers and students in the VEX robotics program and coordinates the State Championships each year. HSFL will be bringing a Neutron-1 model and the Artemis cubesat kit structure. HSFL provides hands-on opportunities for undergraduates to work on satellite projects and also offers a similar cubesat program geared at grades 7-12.
Waialua High School Robotics Team
"The Hawaiian Kids" will be demonstrating their FIRST and VEX Robotics Competition Robots, as well as demonstrate our entrepreneurship special projects as part of our STEM Learning Center. i.e. our catalytic converter shields project and 2 Robots with the fields to demonstrate each of the 2 robotics programs. We also have some team banner displays to showcase our student learning and outreach throughout the school year.
Pacific Fleet Virtual Command Center (VCC)
Allows commanders, senior staff and other personnel to remotely view information via virtual reality (VR) headsets as if they were standing in the command center. Display feeds can be received from any system, and a 3D terrain table is included to superimpose live telemetry data in near real-time.
Nanakuli High and Intermediate School
Home to the Nanakuli Golden Hawks Robotics team. An afterschool program taught and coached by Mr. Richard Enright, a retired Navy Master Chief and the Engineering Teacher at Nanakuli High School.
The VEX Robotics program provides an Education based platform and inspires our youth towards careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The VEX Robotics program provides an educational experience and a sport-like atmosphere, which encourages social and teamwork skills. Students learn concepts, coding, programming, designing their robots to perform certain functions during competition rounds.
Students take the initiative to use their critical thinking, designing and brainstorming skills; along with building, programming and communication skills, to create a competitive and functioning robot. Throughout their current 2021-2022 robotics season, the Nanakuli Golden Hawks teams, have competed in Live Remote Tournaments, Skills only Tournaments and in-person competitions, where the majority of the teams were awarded with multiple qualifying awards (Two Excellence Awards, two Design Awards, two Sportsmanship Awards, one Robot Skills winner, and one Robot Skills Runner-up). These Awards qualified three teams to go to Nationals. They also qualified four teams for the Hawaii State Championship, two teams to the World Championships in Dallas Texas. They are also the current State CTSO Mobile Robotics Champions, which they achieved in February and will be competing in June in the National CTSO Championship.
